Technically, Bank Nifty-Fut (BNF) has to sustain over 24650 for a further rally towards 24775/24900-25100/25300-25500/25850 in the near term (under bullish case scenario).

The Indian market (Nifty Fut/India-50) closed around 10280 on Tuesday, edged up by almost 0.16% on mixed global cues amid Trump’s Amazon war and China trade retaliation coupled with RBI relief for the banks to spread its Q4 bond loses provisions up to next four quarters. Nifty Fut-I made an opening minute low of 10206 and a closing session high of 10297, primarily boosted by the public sector banks (PSBS) amid RBI bond loss relief, albeit temporarily.

The RBI bond relief also caused lower bond yields for the benchmark 10Y GSEC, which fell to a low of 7.312% from prior day’s close of 7.398%; i.e. down by almost 10 bps and also 50 bps from the recent high of around 7.80%, boosting the overall market sentiment, specially PSBS.

The Indian market sentiment was also boosted by an upbeat GST (Feb) as well as direct tax collection and auto sales numbers but dragged by a subdued Manufacturing PMI for March, which fell to 51.0 from 52.1 clocked in February (estimate: 52.8).

The Indian market also got some support from a key amendment of the IBC/NCLT rule, which will allow MSME defaulter promoters to bid for their own company, provided they are not marked as willful defaulters.

ICICI saga may continue for a much wider angle involving other banks:

ICICI bank got some boost amid the buzz of an imminent resignation of its CEO, which may pave the way for image rebuilding for the Bank. Also, being the largest private bank in India and “too large to fail”, the government will not allow the bank to sink as it would pose a systemic risk in the banking sector in that scenario.

There are reports that apart from Videocon, various other mid-sized corporates, having borrowing relationship with ICICI Bank are also investors of the controversial NuPower Company and thus the allegation of conflict of interest is gaining momentum apart from other wrongdoings. After the ICICI and Axis Bank fiasco, the government has ruled out a plan for an immediate privatization of the PSBS, but that option remains open for the future.

Meanwhile, after the market hours, Indian private weather forecaster Skymet has projected normal monsoon for India in 2018 and it sees 5% chance of excess monsoon rains in India this year. This is good news for the Indian rural economy and the market as the country still depends largely on rainwater for its farm output.

On Tuesday, overall Indian market was helped by banks and financials, automakers, media, metals, pharma, reality, consumption, energies, infra, while dragged by techs (H1B visa concern and lower USDINR) and selected private banks (HDFC twins). ICICI Bank was the top Nifty gainer and contributed almost 40% of Nifty gains after days of slump amid CEO controversy with Videocon loan.

Tire (Tyre) stocks were in the limelight on trade protection measure by the government after it imposed 15% tax from previous 10% on imported radials for Trucks and buses.

EU and US cues were supportive of the Indian market on Tuesday:

On Tuesday, global cues were supportive of the Indian market. US stock future (SPX-500) was trading higher by 0.50% as some of the gloom from Monday dissipated and as overseas stock markets did not fall as far as US stocks did on Monday. The Euro Stoxx-50 was down only by 0.58%, which is a substantially smaller decline than Monday's 2.23% plunge in the SPX-500 index.

Asian stocks closed with losses of less than -1%: Japan Nikkei -0.45%, Hong Kong Hang Seng +0.29%, China Shanghai -0.84%, Taiwan TAIEX -0.61%, Australian S&P 200 -0.13%, Singapore Str. Times -0.54%, South Korea KOSPI 200 -0.20%, India Sensex 30 +0.35%. Indian market basically outperformed its Asian peers on improved tone in the EU market after tepid opening. Also, a higher USD and lower EUR was beneficial for the export-heavy Asian as well as EU market.

The Trump administration is reportedly pushing for a preliminary NAFTA agreement that it can announce next week ahead of Mexican as well as US elections in November. Trump is gradually shifting his global trade war stance towards China only.

On Tuesday, the Australian central bank (RBA) announced its monthly policy meeting and left its key interest rate unchanged at a record low of 1.5% for the 20th straight month, which was fully in line with market expectations. RBA tone was quite optimistic and it may be termed as “less dovish” hold.

BOJ Governor Kuroda told parliament that it is internally discussing how to begin exiting from its stimulus program but that it is too early to talk about details in public right now as it could create confusions.

Asian stocks were mostly lower as the downbeat tone rolled over from Wall St where China’s trade retaliation and tech woes weighed heavily across all the bourses, with overnight losses in the SPX-500 (-2.2%) exacerbated on technical selling after a break below the 200DMA (2580) while the Nasdaq underperformed as it slipped into the red YTD and into correction territory.

ASX 200 and Nikkei 225 both opened lower with the latter suffering the brunt of a firmer currency and with losses seen across tech names following similar underperformance in their US counterparts, which was led by selling in Amazon after Trump’s tirade on the online giant. Conversely, Australian stocks then recovered as mining stocks and energy names outperformed.

Hang Seng and Shanghai conformed to the tech-related losses and after the PBOC refrained from liquidity operations for an 8th consecutive occasion, while markets in Hong Kong also took their first opportunity to react to China’s tariffs on US products and reports of the government pressuring banks to halt local government lending.

European bourses have opened lower after losses on Wall St. and Asia overnight. Chinese trade retaliation and tech woes weighed heavily across the bourses. The tech sell-off rolled over from the previous sessions with the sector underperformed. Semi-conductors are amongst the worst performers as names take a hit on the news that Apple is looking to steer away from Intel chips to create their own by 2020.

On the flip side, Barclays was initially higher after reports the bank is planning a multi-million GBP share buyback. Miners were amongst the top performers after feeling the boost from firmer base metal prices. Finally, Sky was at the top of the FTSE 100 amid news that Fox is offering to sell Sky News to Disney as it seeks to obtain regulatory clearings for its proposed takeover of Sky.

The Indian market story on 02/04/2018:

The Indian market (Nifty Fut/India-50) closed around 10270 on Monday, jumped by almost 1.16% on global catch up the rally, an upbeat auto sales figure for March and buzz of RBI bond relief for the banks. But the market was also under some pressure on loan scam allegations for ICICI and Axis Bank. Nifty Fut-April made an opening session low of around 10164 and a closing minute high of 10275.

Banks made some sharp recovery in the last hour of trade on reports that RBI may allow them to spread bond trading loses (MTM provisions) for Q4FY18 over up to four quarters. As a reminder, almost 50% of operating profit of the public sector banks (PSBS) comes from their bond portfolio and as bond prices plummeted by almost 10% in FY-18, banks are now sitting on a huge MTM loss from their bond portfolio to the tune of Rs.200 bln.

The RBI relief may come as a major reprieve for the PSBS, which have been hard hit by trading losses from a sustained spike in bond yields over recent months since July’17 and are also struggling under the burden of provisioning for record levels of bad loans (NPA). After DeMo, Indian banks were required to hold more bonds for their regulatory requirement of SLR as liquidity surged.

But, the RBI bond relief for the banks may be temporary as it’s merely a window dressing of accounting norms and may not solve the basic issues of higher Indian bond yields and borrowing costs as fiscal deficit is quite stretched. The RBI bond relief may also backfire, as it shows the regulator/government is under panic and taking desperate steps to change the accounting rules as par convenience and thus confidence of the investors (FPIS) may also lose.

Indian macro data was positive on Monday:

After the Indian market hours, Infrastructure output for February came as subdued at 5.3% vs prior 6.1% (Y/Y). But direct tax collection for FY-18 soared by 17.1% to Rs.9.95 tln; corporate tax jumped by 17.1% and personal tax surged by 18.9%. February GST collections till 31st March was also upbeat at Rs.0.89 tln as compliance improved.

But overall Indian market mood was gloomy amid ICICI Bank loan fiasco with the Videocon group as the market may have also lost confidence on the repeated breach of basic corporate governance in the Indian banking system, be it public or private barring some exceptions. RBI may also intervene in the ICICI Bank issues as it had already intervened in the Axis Bank CEO Reappointment case.

On Monday, overall Indian market was supported by selected private banks (Kotak/HDFC), automakers, financials, FMCG, Techs (IT), media, metals, pharma (US FDA product approvals and favorable plant observations), reality, energies, consumption and infra, while it was dragged by selected private banks (ICICI/Axis) and PSBS.

Global cues were negative on a holiday thinned-trading during Indian market hours:

On Monday, during Indian market hours, overall global cues were negative as EU was on holiday. US stock future (SPX-500) was down 0.24% after China announced the implementation of its previously-announced tariffs on about $3 billion of US imports in retaliation for US metal tax.

Tech stocks remain on the defensive after Trump over the weekend tweeted criticism of Amazon regarding its use of the US Postal Service for deliveries, payment of little taxes or no taxes at all and the overall discounting business model adopted by the Amazon, which has forced hundreds of small retailers shutting down their operations.

Markets were closed for Easter Monday in UK, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, and most of Europe.  Asian stocks closed mostly lower on continued trade tensions after China announced the implementation of its tariffs on US products coupled with softer manufacturing PMI data from many countries in Asia: Japan Nikkei -0.31%, China Shanghai -0.18%, Taiwan TAIEX -0.29%, Singapore Str. Times +0.08%, South Korea KOSPI 200 -0.19%, but India BSE Sensex 30 +0.87%, was an exception.

Most of the Asian markets, which were open, saw aggressive profit-taking into the close: Chinese stocks erased gains to end Monday at session lows, following their worst quarter in two years. Chinese brokers bucked broad market declines after the government announced a trial program for Chinese Depositary Receipts.

On Monday, the PBOC raised the daily reference rate for the Yuan to strongest since 11th Aug 2015, which was the "day of the devaluation", as the dollar weakened: PBOC raised the Yuan reference rate by 0.19% to 6.2764 per USD.

The Indian market story on 28/03/2018:

The Indian market (Nifty Fut-March/India-50) closed around 10115 on Wednesday (last trading day on 28th March), on negative global cues amid “tech wreck” on the concern of US bar on China investments in US tech sector sensitive for “national security” and Trump’s Amazon tantrum along with ongoing data breach fiasco for Facebook.

The Indian market sentiment was also affected by the renewed surge in oil and 10Y bond yields which made a high of 7.412% from the low of 7.286% scaled on early Wednesday after a surprising cut in government borrowing for H1FY19. The market may not be convinced by the “window dressing” of government’s borrowing programme and the sole effort to keep the benchmark 10Y lower at any cost.

The Indian market was also under pressure on ICICI Bank-Videocon loan fiasco and CEO’s role in the same amid allegation of corruption/nepotism/conflict of interest/quid pro.

There is also another story of an advisory firm (corporate restructuring) linked to the CEO family, who has the broker role in various big corporate loan raising under the umbrella of consortium of banks, in which ICICI bank (CEO) has often the lead role in pitching for the grant of such huge loans in the credit committee. The advisory form usually got a hefty commission of 5% of the sanctioned limit/loan as per the allegation.

Thus the whole Indian banking system may be now under a trust deficit as the market is concerned that such alleged malpractices between CEOs of various banks and promoters of the companies do exist pointing towards a huge corruption and money laundering angle behind today’s Indian NPA saga.

On Wednesday, Nifty Fut (April) made an opening minute high of around 10195 and late day low of 10140 before the long weekend. Overall, for the FY-18, Nifty gained by almost 10%, while for March expiry series, it lost around 2.5%. The benchmark 10Y Indian bond yield surged by 9.2%, while oil is up by a massive 36% for FY-18.

On Wednesday, overall Indian market was dragged by banks and financials, automakers, FMCG, media, metals, pharma, reality, energies, infra, consumption and mixed techs. The selling was quite broad-based and solid ahead of the financial year ending and re-imposition of long-term capital gain tax (LTCGT).

After the market hour on Wednesday, the Indian government proudly announced total disinvestment proceeds at over Rs.1 tln for FY-18 from Rs.0.46 tln for FY-17. But that was primarily boosted by the ONGC-HPCL merger deal.

The total fiscal deficit in Apr-Feb’18 came at Rs.7.16 tln, which is around 120% of revised FY-18 target. Total spending came at Rs.19.99 tln vs Rs.17.53 tln (Y/Y), while total Receipts at Rs.12.83 tln vs Rs.11.47 tln with net tax revenue at Rs.10.36 tln.

As par RBI data, credit to core sector such as infra, metal, cement, petroleum products, coal group contracted, declined in Feb’2018, while non-food bank credit increased by 9.8% Y/Y and credit to agri & allied activities rose 9%.

Meanwhile, PNB has confirmed that they will honor LOUs worth Rs.650 bln on the basis of an undertaking by claimant bank in the Nirav Modi scam. Overall, apart from stretched valuation, the Indian market was under pressure on NPA and NCLT resolution litigations, corporate loan/bank scam, higher oil, fiscal discipline and re-imposition of LTCGT. The market is also concerned that RBI may eventually hike rate by Dec’2018 on sticky core inflation, still hovering around 5% and higher oil.

Global cues were negative during the Indian market hours on Wednesday:

On Wednesday, global cues were muted. US stock future (SPX-500) was up 0.05% and European stocks were down 0.68% as weakness in technology stocks dragged down global stock indexes.  Weakness in energy stocks was another negative for the overall market with crude oil down 0.67% on concern a global supply glut may persist after API data late Tuesday showed US crude stockpiles rose 5.32 MB last week.

The slide in stocks has benefited government bond markets as flight-to-safety demand has pushed the 10-year German bund yield down to a 2-1/2 month low of 0.473% and pushed the 10-year T-note yield down to a 1-1/2 month low of 2.74%.

Asian stocks closed lower: Japan -1.34%, Hong Kong -2.50%, China -1.40%, Taiwan -1.10%, Australia -0.73%, Singapore -1.64%, South Korea -1.43%, India -0.62%.  Asian equity markets followed U.S. markets lower as losses in technology stocks spread across the globe.

Asian equity markets traded negative across the board as the region followed negative cues from the losses on Wall St where trade concerns lingered and tech sold-off, while some also attributed the exacerbated pressure to flows heading into month-end and Easter break.

As such, ASX 200 and Nikkei 225 were lower as tech stocks conformed to the losses in their counterparts stateside, while weakness in commodities also contributed to the glum. Elsewhere, KOSPI, pharmaceutical, and metal stocks joined the tech underperformance after reports stated South Korea steel exports to the US would decline 30% under the new trade agreement and that South Korea will amend its premium pricing program for pharmaceuticals to allow participation of US drug makers.

Hang Seng and Shanghai Comp were also dragged by the tech slide while encouraging earnings from big four banks ICBC and China Construction Bank only provided brief support and was eventually engulfed by the stock rout.

European equities have extended on the risk-averse tone seen in the US and Asia, triggered by a tech sell-off which prompted losses within the IT sector in Europe in the morning trade, augmented by month-end flows.

Global cues were mixed on Thursday:

On Thursday, global cues were positive to some extent. US stock future (SPX-500) was up 0.37% and European stocks are up +0.66% as technology stocks recover after two days of losses.  Also, European automakers are higher on M&A activity after Renault SA and Nissan Motor were said to be in merger talks.

Strength in Germany's labor market is another positive for European equities after the German Mar unemployment rate fell to a record low 5.3%. Trading activity was subdued ahead of the long holiday weekend with the US and Europe closed Friday and Europe also closed Monday for the Easter holiday.

Asian stocks settled mostly higher: Japan +0.61%, Hong Kong +0.24%, China +1.22%, Taiwan -0.18%, Australia -0.52%, Singapore +1.34%, South Korea +0.64%, India closed for holiday. China's Shanghai Composite recovered from losses in the last hour of trade and closed higher on reports of buying from state-sponsored funds.  Wednesday's rally in USDJPY to a 2-week high boosted Japanese exporter stocks as the Nikkei Stock Index closed higher.

Helping the mood were media reports that Japan had sounded out North Korea’s government about a bilateral summit, and that North Korea had also discussed the possibility of a broader meeting with other global leaders. As a result, Japanese shares closed higher even as the yen retraced some of Wednesday’s slump.

Asian equity markets traded indecisively as bourses failed to completely shrug-off the lackluster lead from Wall St. where the major indices were subdued amid month-end flows and continued tech losses. ASX 200 and Nikkei 225 were mixed with Australia dragged lower by tech as well as recent weakness across commodities, while the Japanese benchmark was propped up for most the day by a softer currency.

Elsewhere, Hang Seng and Shanghai Comp were choppy in the midst of earnings season and with initial gains seen following reports of VAT reductions by China, although continued liquidity inaction by the PBOC and ongoing trade tensions with the US eventually weighed. PBOC skipped the OMO for a net daily drain of CNY 40 bln.

European equities were back into positive territory, improving on the mixed tone seen in Asia overnight and shrugging-off the losses on Wall Street. Defensive sectors are in the red with focus on utilities and healthcare whilst broad gains are seen across all the other sectors.
